Dr. Joan C. Oboite

Dr. Joan C. Oboite is a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Family Nurse Practitioner licensed in Maryland and Washington, D.C. She serves as the Medical Director of Our Shepherd Healthcare Center, where she is dedicated to delivering compassionate, patient-centered, and holistic care.

Dr. Oboite earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice with a specialization in Psychiatric Mental Health from the University of Massachusetts Global in Irvine, California in 2022. She previously completed her Master of Science in Nursing and Family Nurse Practitioner training at Howard University in 2005. Her nursing career began at Howard University Hospital where she worked as a Registered Nurse immediately after receiving her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of the District of Columbia in 1987. Since then, she has served in a wide variety of healthcare environments, including acute care hospitals, inpatient and outpatient settings, ambulatory surgery, long-term rehabilitation facilities, correctional healthcare, radiation oncology, and primary care.

With more than 38 years of clinical experience, Dr. Oboite has extensive expertise in evaluating, diagnosing, and managing a broad range of chronic medical conditions as well as mental health disorders in adults of all ages.

Dr. Oboite is also devoted to community outreach. She has participated in numerous health fairs across the Washington D.C. metropolitan area and has volunteered on several international medical mission trips, including multiple visits to Nigeria and a recent trip to Dublin, Ireland.

Her decision to pursue advanced training in psychiatric mental health was inspired by her passion for comprehensive care, her recognition of the growing impact of mental health conditions, and her commitment to improving access to mental health services. This calling became even more evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, which highlighted the critical need for expanded mental health support.

Outside of clinical practice, Dr. Oboite enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, and volunteering at her local church.
